Probably one of my favorite moments during my time in Edinburgh was during my last night in town. I had heard about a small pub that hosted local folk musicians nightly, so I decided to check it out. I walked in and was immediately happy about my decision.

Lively locals were milling about the bar, laughing and talking. The musicians were warming up in a corner, so I took the chance to pull out my camera and politely ask if I might be able to take some photos. The music began and it was incredible. The fiddle player, perfectly in synch with the banjo, piano and accordion, danced around tune after tune without a single stop, the only communication being a slight head nod, or a momentary solo to signal a change in melody.

The energy amongst the players and patrons was magnetic. A jovial, older man struck up a conversation with me about photography and music, the bartender told me the history of his favorite type of brew, and the music played on.

If you’re ever in Scotland, above all else, have a night like this.
